Lavvas) We present a one dimension simulation of Titan’s aerosol distribution and compare our results with the haze optical properties retrieved by the DISR observations (Tomasko, M.G., Doose, L., Engel, S., Dafoe, L.E., West, R., Lemmon, M., Karkoschka, E., See, C. [2008]. Planet. Space Sci. 56, 669–707). We set the mass production of aerosols in the thermosphere to 3 10 14 g cm 2 s 1 and follow the evolution of the particles due to coagulation, sedimentation and atmospheric mixing. We use the observed aerosol phase functions at 100 km to constrain the particle’s charge density to 15 e/lm. With this charge density, the microphysical model predictions for the number of monomers, and the particle size and density, are in good agreement with the DISR measurements. In addition, we derive a new refractive index for the aerosols based on the single scattering albedo inferred from DISR measurements. The imaginary index is larger than previous estimates based on laboratory analogs, with an increasing absorption toward the near-IR. Our simulation provides a good description of the particle properties above 80 km, but we find that condensation effects must be included in order to interpret aerosol characteristics at lower altitudes. 2010 Elsevier Inc. On-the-fly cross flow laser guided separation of aerosol particles based on size, refractive index and density-theoretical analysis.
Laser separation of particles is achieved using forces resulting from the momentum exchange between particles and photons constituting the laser radiation. Particles can experience different optical forces depending on their size and/or optical properties, such as refractive index. Thus, particles can move at different speeds in the presence of an optical force, leading to spatial separations. ...

The main aim of the study was to determine chemical, optical and physical characteristics of aerosol particles responsible for visibility degradation in Yosemite National Park. The park, located in the central Sierra Nevada range in eastern California, was impacted by smoke from wildfire activity in the western United States. Determining the contribution made by smoke to visibility degradation ...
متن کاملOptical Characterization Studies of a Low-Cost Particle Sensor
Compact low-cost sensors for measuring particulate matter (PM) concentrations are receiving significant attention as they can be used in larger numbers and in a distributed manner. Most low-cost particle sensors work on optical scattering measurements from the aerosol. To ensure accurate and reliable determination of PM mass concentrations, a relationship of the scattering signal to mass concen...
متن کاملRetrieval of spatio-temporal distributions of particle parameters from multiwavelength lidar measurements using the linear estimation technique and comparison with AERONET
The results of the application of the linear estimation technique to multiwavelength Raman lidar measurements performed during the summer of 2011 in Greenbelt, MD, USA, are presented. We demonstrate that multiwavelength lidars are capable not only of providing vertical profiles of particle properties but also of revealing the spatio-temporal evolution of aerosol features. The nighttime 3β + 1α ...
متن کاملObservations of smoke-influenced aerosol during the Yosemite Aerosol Characterization Study: Size distributions and chemical composition
[1] The Yosemite Aerosol Characterization Study (YACS) took place in Yosemite National Park from 15 July to 5 September 2002, during which time air masses arriving at the site were believed to have been influenced by smoke from numerous wildfires active in the western United States. Physical, optical, and chemical aerosol measurements were made to characterize visibility and to help define aero...
